iCARE
Steering Committee

1/18/05 ~ We are pleased to announce that Terry McCord has joined the iCARE Steering Committee. Terry teaches social studies at Daniel Morgan Middle School, is an elder at Highland Memorial PC here in Winchester, and is the new chair of their mission committee.  He has on the ground experience in Somalia where he worked bring refugees out to the US in the mid 90's, and has also worked in South Africa. Terry's primary responsibilities on the committee will be related to the work of the new, Orphans of HIV/Aids initiative that is currently under development in the Presbytery under the leadership of Rev. Bill Cox.

12/1/04 ~ The iCARE Steering Committee is very pleased to announce Rev. Bill Cox will be joining us to head a new iCARE ministry dealing with Orphans of HIV/Aids. Bill, who will be retiring the end of this year, is a long term member ansd former chair of the Ethiopian Partnership Committee. Bill was one of the early travelers from the Presbytery to Illubabor Ethiopia and has made the trip several times. Watch for details of the Orphans of HIV/Aids program in our news section and elsewhere across Presbytery.

Feb. 28, 2004 ~ Two pieces of big news from the Steering committee.

1. Jean Kilby, Chair of the iCARE Steering Committee, visited the Gore Home in January. See news of her trip
at  News from Gore.

2. iCARE has expanded its ministry to include two new "Shelters" for students.
This is an exciting new ministry that has been embraced by members of the Presbytery. Two shelters have been funded which will serve over 70 children when completed. Read more at iCARE Shelter Ministry.

Nov. 2003 ~ We received news early this month that Jean Kilby, Chair Elect of the iCARE Steering Committee will be traveling to Ethiopia in January, 2004, as part of a contingent from Harrisonburg First Presbyterian. In addition to working with the Church-to-Church Partnership between the Jimma Church and Harrisonburg First, Jean expects to make the 6 hour journey from Jimma to the Gore Home during the visit.

The iCARE Steering Committee has agreed to take the lead in assessing a proposal from IBS on creating a children's shelter, actually expanding an existing children's shelter, in the region of Alge (pronounced al-gay). There exist today a shelter that serves approximately 12 middle to high school age children. As the proposal states, the need far exceeds the local Presbytery's ability to serve the children and requests a one time contribution of $8,000 USD, to complete a structure to house approximately 40 children. This is a one time cost. The 36 churches of the Alge Presbytery will supervise and maintain the Shelter, as it is now doing with the smaller shelter, once it is built. For more details see
Alge Proposal.

Oct. 2003 ~ In our latest meeting in October, 2003, plans were made for the program of the banquet and the election of a new Chair. Jean Kilby will serve as the Chair of the iCARE Steering Committee beginning January 1, 2004. Jean brings to the position wonderful skills in communication as well as exceptional enthusiasm in serving in the iCARE ministry.

June 2003 ~In the spring of 2002, the Partnership Committee recognized that the level of work required to manage the iCARE program would best be served by a special subcommittee whose primary task was to manage this important ministry. This reasoning was spurred on by the realization that Brian Gilchrest, missionary with substantial responsibilities for the Gore Home since the inception of iCARE, was returning to the states and a "Management Committee" had been established in Gore to manage the operations of the home.

The iCARE Steering Committee was established to manage the "sponsorship end" of the iCARE program. The iCARE Steering Committee currently has five members; their names, church homes, and email addresses are listed in the column to the right.  The subcommittee's primary responsibilities include:

1. serving as a liaison between the sponsors and  the Management Committee of the Gore Home,

2. responding to questions and needs of the sponsors,

3. responding to questions and needs of the Gore Home and iCARE sponsored children,

4. praying for, and acting as a catalyst to generate prayer for the children, staff, and overall ministry of the Gore Home,

5. initiating questions and ideas, with and between the iCARE Steering Committee,  the Partnership Committee, the Management Committee of the Gore Home, and the administration of the Gore Home, to constantly seek solutions and initiatives that will enhance the lives of iCARE sponsored children and the overall effectiveness of the iCARE ministry.

6. facilitating planning, resources,  processes, and follow-up for the annual collection and distribution of iCARE Sponsor funds,

7.  maintaining a master list of iCARE sponsored children and corresponding  sponsors,

8. providing for the general promotion and education, related to the iCARE ministry, for churches, organizations and individuals within the Shenandoah Presbytery.
