Immigrant Learning Tour
Central Valley Mission Community
February 3-5, 2003

NewBridges hosted 12 members of the CVMC Coordinating Team on a Learning Tour.  The purpose of the tour was to learn about the life of immigrants in the Harrisonburg community.  We gained an increased awareness and understanding of the immigrant population, their experiences, perspectives, and needs.

While at the Harrisonburg Health Department, we participated in a group discussion about health issues facing the inmmigrant community.
Additionally, a panel of immigrants shared their experiences entering the Harrisonburg culture.

On two occassions we shared traditional hispanic meals with our hosts. An excellent Mexican lunch was served at the Quick Market Deli on Route 11 South in Harrisonburg.

A visit with the Health Department

We visited the Health Department to learn about the health services offered there. Amoung those present were Beth Rogers from AHEC, Lay Health Promoters, a member of the Health Interpreters Program, and Anita Warren, Head of the Hispanic Council.

Preparing for Tour at Cargill Poultry

Our final expedition was a tour through the Dayton processing plant where we were impressed with the cleanliness of the plant and the concern for the safety of the workers.
