HIGHLANDS-AUGUSTA MISSION COMMUNITY
Quarterly Meeting – October 19, 2010
Waynesboro Second Presbyterian Church
133 N. Delphine Avenue – Waynesboro, VA 22980
1. Opening prayer for luncheon to follow
2. Report on Disciples’ Kitchen – John McDonald
(See handout)
3. Group approved $100 contribution to the Disciples’
Kitchen
4. 2010 Baja Mission Trip Report – Mac Sterrett
– (See handouts)
Group approved setting aside unspent money from the budgeted 2010 money
for HAMC for the 2011 trip to be given at the conclusion of the 2010 year.
5. Habitat for Humanity involvement – Reed Hopkins
and guest Rhonda Howdyshell, Executive Director - The group decided
to send a letter surveying the churches hoping for a positive response to
do a Presbyterian Build in 2011. See handout for details about the
process for a previous 2003-04 build by Presbyterian Churches of Augusta
County.
6. Comments about “The Big Event” were very positive
recommending that another event be planned next year. About 290 folks
attended with all ages being represented. There were 21
workshops and 29 mission exhibits
with many churches having displays of their involvement in mission at home
and around the world.
7. The Mission Community Picnic held in August
was also a positive experience for those who attended. However, suggestions
were made to have earlier publicity, possible involvement of SPYCE or other
music or activities available to increase the attendance.
8. Nominating Committee Report – John MacDonald
and Sally Hinchman - Suggestion made to provide written list of elders
to serve on the various committees from our churches. Presbytery is
working to have a list of willing folks to serve.
9. Associate Convener to replace Pat Klumpp who
has moved from the area. Everyone is requested to think of possible
persons for this position. It requires attending Presbytery Council
four times/year, taking notes at HAMC Meetings, and working with the Convener
on ideas and plans for those meetings. Please notify Howard ASAP of
any suggestions you have.
10. Discussion of having meetings at lunchtime
like today’s meeting or evening meetings as previously done – People have
conflicts either way so the next meeting will be a lunch gathering, possibly
at Shoney’s large meeting room at the Staunton location.
11. The called meeting of the Mission Community – re:
Shenandoah 2010 – There was not a large attendance
and it seems that the activities and concerns were similar to several other
Mission Communities. One factor for HAMC is the number of churches included
and the geographic area being too large. The process of analyzing data
collected is still in discussion at the Presbytery level.
12. Presbytery
HAMC Disaster Network Update – Contact: Gloyd May, Coordinator
337-0935 or c 649-1730 in case there is a disaster with the Mission Community.
E-mail address – ibew1950@hotmail.com
13. Sharing “Good News Reports” (success stories
from our churches) There were numerous success stories from our HAMC
Churches.
14. Other Business – Communications – Presbytery
Staff Lisa reported that Resource Center has received new
materials from Presbyterian Distribution Center so please come and check
these out.
15. Prayer concerns – Adjournment- Noted especially
from the HAMC were the death of Ray Fitzgerald – Service of the Resurrection
to be held on Saturday, October 23 at 11 a.m. at Tinkling Spring Church
with lunch to follow; the end of year retirements of Bob von Oeyen, Jr.
from Bethany and Joe Brandon from Olivet.

Highland-Augusta Mission Community
Meeting
April 27, 2010
At Mt. Horeb Presbyterian Church
The Highland-Augusta Mission Community met at Mt. Horeb Presbyterian Church
on April 27, 2010, for its first daytime meeting. The new meeting time
was well received and participation was excellent. The meeting was
opened with prayer. Twenty-two persons participated.
The Rev. Idossa from Ethiopia spoke at this meeting, challenging us to
continue to be in mission.
Plans for the Big Event, scheduled for September 11, were introduced and
well received.
It was reported that eight pastors and nine churches will participate
in the pulpit exchange that will be held on May 16.
Following discussion, the Mission Community agreed to participate in the
Shenandoah 2010 mission study to take place on Wednesday, July 14.
The Mission Community will have a picnic for Mission Community churches
sometime in August 2010.
Also, we will once again sponsor the annual pilgrimage to Baja, Mexico.
Several churches in H-A M C will again participate in the Summerlee (WV)
mission trip.
The Mission Community agreed to keep the budget-of-asking at $5,000 for
2011, 2012, and 2013.
In addition, members shared at least one success story of their churches
with the group.
Pat Klumpp, who soon will be leaving the area, was recognized for
her service and participation to the Highland-Augusta Mission Community
for many years.
The meeting was closed with prayer. A delicious luncheon was served
by the PW of Mt. Horeb.
Respectfully submitted,
Dr. Howard A. Newman
Convener

HIGHLAND-AUGUSTA MISSION COMMUNITY
January 14, 2010
Minutes
Attendees: Howard Newman, Convener, Alice Wenger, Mt. Horeb;
Pat Klumpp, Bethany; Lisa Hedrick, Presbytery & Covenant; Dan Williams,
Staunton 2nd; Merle Fisher, Ramona Bosserman, Charlotte and Bob Kuyendahl,
Tinkling Springs; Reed Hopkins, Loch Willow; Charlie McFarland, Springhill;
Sally Hinchman, Interim General Presbyter; Beth McCrary, Augusta Stone.
Howard Newman gave the opening prayer and grace before
the meal. A delightful and delicious meal was prepared and
served by members of August Stone Church.
A new Presbytery Directory is in process so attendees were
requested to see that their church listings were correct and up-to-date
and to notify Presbytery of any changes needed.
Dan Williams provided an update on the FOG Study as well
as the 2010 Baja Mission Trip. Dates for the trip are July 25-30.
There are still openings if anyone wants to sign up. $2500 was carried
over from the 2009 budget.
There
was an in-depth discussion of the results of the survey taken in 2009.
We will try meeting some at mid-day as well as evenings to see if the attendance
will change, increase, etc. Joint mission projects were discussed
but no decision made. Howard will look into the feasibility of a pulpit
exchange within the Mission Community similar to that currently in existence
in Staunton. Continuation of the Baja Mission Trips seems to be a
favorable project. Reed Hopkins is going to look into Habitat for
Humanity to determine if there may be a project available there that would
be of interest. Howard talked about the garden project that Mt Horeb
undertook in 2009. The garden benefitted the needed without huge cost
or excessive labor on any one person. We talked about the separation
of HAMC into two separate mission communities. Meanwhile, we are going
to solicit the churches within HAMC for good news we might share with others.
Our next meeting will be at Thursday, April 20th at Mt
Horeb. The meeting will start at 11:00 am with lunch at 12:30 pm.
Prayer concerns were addressed and Howard closed the meeting with a prayer.
